An indigenous doula is a trained professional who provides expert guidance and support during the birthing experience drawing upon Indigenous knowledge and experience to care for birthing mothers, their babies, partner and family.
The doula’s goal and role is to help the person feel safe and comfortable and ensure the cultural and spiritual needs of the person are met, complementing the role of the healthcare professionals that provide medical care. Doulas do not administer medication or other medical treatment or give medical advice. Some doulas work as volunteers while others are paid for their services.
Studies show that doulas improve childbirth outcomes by increasing the likelihood of vaginal births, decreasing the need for pain medication, and improving the perception of the birthing experience.
